Shakila Rafiq
is a well known Urdu short story writer currently based in
Toronto, Canada. Her style of story telling does not only
articulate the thoughts, but also the images. She knows the
art of story telling and avoids using weighty words and unfamiliar
symbols. As she is in Canada for only last few years, her
memories of the land where she grew up and received her education
are still fresh, and therefore, picks up themes for most of
her stories from that soil only instead of searching themes
in the alien land. However, the theme of one of the short
stories ("Ba Wazu Dulhan") she presented at a literary
session of HUMSAR as derived from the new social milieu. It
was a well constructed story and it's impact was superb.
Born in Sitapur (U.P) Shakila Rafiq did her Masters in Urdu
from Karachi University. She worked in Pakistan Airlines for
about seven years. She has to date seven collections of short
stories to her credit.
